Zoë Chicco is Celebrating the 20-year Anniversary of Her Jewelry Brand and Branching Out in New Directions
The designer’s down-to-earth take on gold and diamonds focuses on charms, stackable rings and personal, sentimental pieces that you’ll never want to take off.
Zoë Chicco’s precocious pursuit of a jewelry career has paid off. She started studying jewelry before she was out of high school and began working as a jeweler right after college. This year she’s celebrating her namesake company’s two-decade anniversary. Her formula for success has been creating unintimidating fine jewelry equally suited to making a fashion statement or marking important milestones.
Your gold and diamond pavé ring and hoops seem like a bit of a departure for you. Do you think so?
Both pieces started out as part of our Chubby Huggie series. They’re heavier and chunkier than what I’m known for. The ring is a simple band that has pavé diamonds halfway around. It can be worn as a wedding ring or a band that can layer with other rings. It’s clean and pretty on its own but I love it stacked to do a bigger, chunkier look. And it’s got straight edges so it will pair really nicely. You can do it with thin rings or thicker rings.
I wear a version of the huggies every day. They’re really good everyday earrings that are small but pack a punch. I wear matching earrings in the first hole in each ear and I have three holes on each side, so I’ll mix in studs and other huggie hoops.
The series was definitely inspired by the 1970s. That’s when I was born and I love fashion from that decade. Love a wide legged jean.
Is there a piece of diamond jewelry that you never take off?
My brand signature is easy, wearable jewelry. I wear A LOT of it. And pretty much everything has diamonds on it to some degree. Not only do I not take anything off, I keep adding. Other than a few long necklaces that I remove when I sleep, I keep all my jewelry on. I have pieces that I haven’t taken off for ten years. I’m probably wearing upward of 30 pieces at any time. There’s meaning to everything. I have a lot personalized pieces from moments in time, like when I got married or the birth of my son. I create mementos. That’s why I never take them off.

When did natural diamonds first get your attention?
My mother’s original wedding ring was gold with no diamonds. She lost it. When my dad replaced it he gave her a very, very simple channel-set band with diamonds all the way around. I was immediately struck and asked, “What is that?!” That was first time I became aware of how beautiful and clean and sparkly diamonds are. It definitely made the impression and I was only about six years old.
It’s your company’s 20-year anniversary. What’s on your radar as you look ahead?
I’m loving working with heavier chains set with larger diamonds. We’ve started doing one-of-a-kind pieces with shield cut diamonds and people love them. I’ve worn one myself for several years. It’s been fun to play with bigger, bolder diamonds in unusual shapes. People see them on Instagram and love them.
