EXCLUSIVE: How This Designer Re-Imagined Princess Diana’s Jewellery for “Spencer”
See the diamond jewellery worn by Kristen Stewart in “Spencer” and the real life pieces that inspired them.
While we’re all eagerly awaiting Pablo Larraín’s movie Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, let’s take a look at some of the film’s iconic diamond jewellery designs created by Mouawad.
Each of the Mouawad pieces has been modeled after some of the late Princess of Wales’s most famous jewels. Her string of chunky pearls, her sapphire and diamond engagement ring, her statement diamond necklaces, and more are featured throughout the film.

“Mouawad has an illustrious heritage in jewellery and watchmaking, and over the decades has been the choice for royalty and celebrities when seeking a unique statement piece or set of jewellery,” said Mouawad Co-Guardians, Fred, Alain, and Pascal Mouawad. “It has been a pleasure to work on Spencer, providing the jewellery for the role of an iconic princess known for her style as well as her powerful impact on the world.”
We got an exclusive up-close look at some of the pieces Mouawad designed to capture Princess Diana’s jewellery in Spencer, and couldn’t help but scour the internet to find the photos of Diana in the original pieces.
The story itself takes place in a pivotal life-changing weekend for Princess Diana at Balmoral as the royal gathered for the Christmas holidays in the early 1990s. Critics are already predicting this will be an Oscar-worthy role for Stewart, and we can’t wait to see her in costume in this iconic role.
Ahead, you’ll find exclusive images of the jewellery used in the film plus the real-life inspiration behind the pieces. Spencer hits theatres on November 5.
Princess Diana’s Engagement Ring
Of course, Princess Diana’s engagement ring was featured in the film. Mouawad’s design features 1.82 carats of diamond and 7.25 carats of sapphire, reminiscent of Princess Diana’s own iconic engagement ring, shown on the right. Above, Kristen Stewart wears the replica by Mouawad.
“Mouawad was a natural choice to be the movie’s exclusive jewellery sponsor based on its 131 years of heritage of craftsmanship in fine jewellery and watchmaking, and its renown as the jeweller of choice to royalty and to celebrities across the world,” said a spokesperson for the brand. “The aim was to portray Princess Diana’s classic style and effortless elegance while adorning her with jewellery that was historically accurate and would have been similar to what she had worn at the time. What the choice of jewellery shows is that her style and that of classic jewellery transcends time.” We couldn’t agree more.
Princess of Diamonds and Pearls
Above you’ll see the pearl stud earrings with a yellow diamond halo designed by Mouawad and inspired by the pearl pieces worn by Diana on many occasions, including a trip to the US.

Princess Diana had many pearl necklaces, but we think this Mouawad design was modelled after this necklace featuring large pearls and a stunning diamond clasp.
Diana loved a diamond and pearl drop earring, and this design from Mouawad is reminiscent of the pair she is wearing on the left with a floral-inspired stud and pearl drop.
Featuring a smaller diamond stud and longer pearl drop earring, the Mouawad design on the left is very similar to the pair of earrings worn by the Princess of Wales on the right.
Making a Statement with a Statement Necklace
Another classic Princess Diana style, this diamond statement necklace is a true stunner.
