Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s Greatest Diamond Jewellery Looks
What began as a flirtatious friendship a decade ago has recently blossomed into a relationship and parenthood for pop star/fashion icon Rihanna and stylish rapper A$AP Rocky. And among other things, the style maverick duo and parents-to-be excel at putting together unabashedly confident looks by way of bold wardrobe and jewellery choices.
For Rihanna, more is more: one ring or necklace is never enough. No-one wears jewels like her; her knack for mixing priceless high-end and antique diamonds from the likes of Chopard or Neil Lane with urban chic street-style jewellery is unlike no other.
Meanwhile, A$AP Rocky has surged past the traditional diamond and gold rapper chains and oversized novelty pendants, and embraced antique Victorian pieces featuring pearls and diamonds, proving that men can have fun with jewellery, too. While the couple certainly loves to wear jewellery, it’s important to note that the jewels never wear them. Take a look back at their greatest diamond jewellery moments to see what we mean.
Rihanna’s Heavenly Gems at 2018 Met Gala
When the theme of the 2018 Met Gala was “Heavenly Bodies”, Rihanna made sure to deliver. For her bejeweled Maison Margiela dress and rhinestone encrusted mitre, Rihanna chose a necklace straight from Cartier‘s archives: The Cartier crucifix. The necklace was first created in 1934 by Cartier London and was re-introduced after the war in 1949. The original 1934 design included gold, silver, diamonds, sapphires, rubies, pearls, opals and topazes. True to RiRi’s jewellery style, she layered on a $33,000 antique old mine diamond rivière necklace from Kentshire, and paired it with several diamond anklets from XIV Karats.
The Art of Mixing and Matching Diamonds at the Launch of Fenty Beauty in London
In 2017, Rihanna schooled us in the art of mixing and matching diamond jewels. At the London launch of Fenty Beauty, she combined a stunning Chopard diamond necklace, stud earrings, bangles and watch with Anabela Chan’s diamond peony butterfly rings and Messika’s My Twin Trilogy diamond ring. Edgy but dainty diamond ear cuffs by Anita Ko were complemented with a statement-making Etho Maria pear diamond cuff.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky: Dynamic Diamond Duo at 2019 Fashion Awards
The Fenty mogul and her rapper boyfriend made their red carpet debut at the 2019 Fashion Awards in London where she was presented with the Urban Luxe Award. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were adorned with diamond stud earrings—his, a personal pair from XIV Karats; hers, round diamond studs from Harry Kotlar. Rihanna opted for a flashier diamond jewellery look via her Silk Mardin necklace that featured over 21 carats of diamonds and more than 37 carats of aquamarines laid in an intricate decorative pattern by Swiss high jeweller Boghossian. If there was ever a Cinderella and Prince Charming moment during a red carpet event, this would be it.
Diamond Warrior on the Cover of W Magazine
When the call came for W Magazine’s style director Edward Enninful’s choice for a post-apocalyptic queen to star in the magazine’s editorial aptly named Tomorrow, Rihanna was his first and only choice. Upon their collaboration, the two quickly determined that she needed a diamond tiara and jewels of her own. Initially commissioned for the Countess of Essex, Rihanna’s tiara was pulled from the historic Cartier Collection from 1902 and featured a whopping 1,048 diamonds! Rounding out her look was a diamond choker, which was first commissioned in 1906 by Mary Scott Townsend, a member of Washington’s high society. If and when the world does face an apocalyptic doom, we know we would want RiRi—complete with a diamond tiara and choker—to rescue us all.
Mega Wattage for the Diamond Ball
Another jewellery lesson to glean from the singer is that there’s no such thing as too much bling! Pushing the carat limit at her own 2018 Diamond Ball, Rihanna wore well over 100 carats of Chopard diamonds. The 30-year-old’s enormous earrings featured a flawless 50 carat brilliant cut rock, while her cushion cut ring weighed in at nearly 27 carats … 20 of those coming from the giant center diamond alone!
Layering Lessons at the Queen & Slim Hollywood Premiere
Coco Chanel once stated, “When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on.” Well, Coco Chanel never met Rihanna. At the Queen & Slim movie premiere in Hollywood, Rihanna showed up with an eye-catching rock crystal black enamel and diamond necklace à la David Webb that she paired with Neil Lane’s diamond and onyx cross creating a layered jewellery look that was a classic example of one of just many of Rihanna’s statement-making jewellery moments.
Pearl Envy at the 2021 Tribeca Festival Premiere
A$AP Rocky’s jewellery style consistently serves us what the next big trend will be often before it debuts on the world’s catwalks. Case in point at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of his documentary Stockholm Syndrome—which happens to include a cameo by girlfriend Rihanna—the rapper was spotted with a Galt & Bro white gold and white south sea pearl lariat necklace paired with huge XIV Karats pearl and diamond cocktail rings aplenty.
Victorian Revival at Loewe Show Paris Fashion Week
Not adverse to breaking boundaries, we caught the rapper sporting his trademark diamond stud earrings with a single strand of pearls and what appears to be a pearl choker with a central, ornate painted portrait surrounded by diamonds fit for the Victorian era. It’s a piece that one might be lucky enough to uncover in an antique mall, and for A$AP Rocky it was definitely cool enough to sport to Paris Fashion Week.
Edwardian Diamonds in June/July 2021 Issue of GQ Magazine
Rocky’s jewels in the latest issue of GQ magazine is a lesson in how to topple the norms of traditional jewellery for men and make it more of your own. The Harlem rapper easily pulled off layering a $75,000 platinum and diamond Cartier Edwardian choker circa 1915 from Stephen Russell with pearl necklaces by Mikimoto x Comme des Garçons. And, just when you think three necklaces are enough, A$AP added a vintage chain by Cartier from FD Gallery to the mix, all while flashing a custom grill crafted by Tetsuya Akiyama of GRILLZ JEWELZ.
When interviewed in the magazine A$AP referred to his pop-icon girlfriend as the love of his life. And just like that it was the evolution of his style and relationship status.
